Yes, the Republican Party is stinking itself up, but so is the Democratic Party, because all the so-called comprehensive immigration reforms on the table are moose hockey, leaving out over 100 million Mexicans, who are still there and aren't going away. If the GOP wants Mexican votes, it should heal the old wounds first. If the Republican Party is the Party of Lincoln its leaders should seize the initiative to declare a goal of annexing Mexico and turning it into 10 new U.S. states in return for granting all Mexicans U.S. citizenship. The current border-crossers can be given citizenship now, not in return for fines etc., but immediately upon signing a pledge to support annexation, looking forward to a plebiscite of all Mexicans to dissolve their failed runt nation and become part of E Pluribus Unim. The 60-state U.S. will then be able to better take on the world. For details see my Megamerge Dissolution Solution Blog, which explains my bipartisan plan that cuts to the chase and makes a weakness into a strength, and will definitely benefit the party that first takes up the program.
