GUEST BLOGGER SERIES: Gustavo Arellano “Gringo de Mayo”
Yes, Cinco de Mayo is ridiculous historically, but as a day to celebrate being Mexican it's perfectly okay. Too bad, it's not like St. Patrick's Day when everybody becomes Irish, and suffers from too much misguided racism, nationalism, bitterness over the 1848 territorial grab, maybe even the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs. Instead of letting the bad side prevail, why not make May 5 a pure positive celebration, U.S.-Mexico Megamerge Day, celebrating the incorporation of Mexico as several new states along with full U.S. citizenship for all? Like with Puerto Rico, the U.S. should let the people vote on it first, but if they accept imagine the breakthrough for all Mexicans who will see the 2K-mi. political border disappear and have full freedom of movement along with economic freedom.
